Gary Hall, Sr., weighs in on how to make the most of your pull underwater and in the recovery. The key, he says, is swimming with a relaxed hand.
GoSwim’s Under Lane Breaststroke Drill
- Keep your head down to avoid resistance.
- Get into a great gliding position on each stroke.
- Head in line with arms into an almost streamline position.
- Load the hips (get them high in the water) on each stroke.
Allows you to go farther and faster each time you reach extension.
BONUS
Notice this swimmer’s timing. He completes his pull before he even begins the recovery phase of his kick. This sense of timing is absolutely critical. Remember that you break your streamline each time you begin your kick. Make the most of your pull by keeping your legs still and in streamline until after your hands have returned to streamline.

PRACTICE A LONG, WELL-TIMED AND POWERFUL BREASTSTROKE PULLDOWN EVERY TIME AFTER YOU PUSH OFF THE WALL
We emphasize a “windshield wiper” recovery that involves bending only at the elbows with the elbows “glued” to the ribs until the hands move past the face. This keeps your shape in the water as narrow as can be. One hand scrapes across the body with the other crossed over it.
