Gary Hall, Sr., weighs in on how to make the most of your pull underwater and in the recovery. The key, he says, is swimming with a relaxed hand.
Yet another great video on stroke efficiency from GoSwim. Rather than interject my own comments, I will allow these videos to speak for themselves. The principles found herein can be applied to all four competitive strokes. Enjoy!

“Ultimately, the sport of competitive swimming is about racing.”
Truer words have never been said.
“When you discover a faster way through the water, you should use it.”
Work hard but work smart. Slow down less and you will swim faster.
“Find a teammate of about your speed to race, you can actually do this everyday in practice.”
This is the key to moving fast. As the great Pete Carroll says, “If you want to win forever, always compete.” As Coach Russ would put it, “If you want to swim fast, you have to swim fast.” You don’t need the coach to designate a set as race simulation to practice racing.
Finally, he said “WIN THE WALL” - a common phrase in our program. How cool!
“The Fine Points”
Winning the walls is about checking the momentum shifts. If you’re a faster underwater swimmer, use it. If you’re a faster swimmer, use that. The important part is discovering what works best for you.
